Event Preview
There will be a new champion in this race since defending champion Jimmy Wischusen of Union Catholic isn't running. He missed the State Non-Public B Championships with illness, and therefore didn't have an opportunity to qualify.
The feeling is that if Peyton Shute of Woodbury runs this race (he also qualified for the 1,600), he could make a run at becoming just the eighth runner in meet history to crack 9:00.
Shute, the runner-up at the cross-country Meet of Champions last fall and a Foot Locker XC National finalist, is the state leader with the 9:13.90 he ran two weeks ago at Ocean Breeze when he won by 35 seconds.
There are a total of eight guys who have gone sub 9:20 this season who have qualified for this race. But four of them, Shute, Luke Pash of Ridgewood, (9:16.67) Stephen Kyvelos of Manalapan (9:15.42), and Avery Keith of Westfield (9:16.40), have also qualified in the 1,600, so it remains to be seen which race they pick or if they attempt to double back in this.
The other sub 9:20 guys are Elijah Forest of Collingswood (9:15.55), Alex Kemp of CBA (9:16.28) Nick Kuenkel of Cherokee (9:17.31), and Tage Mehta of Westfield (9:19.96).
