Randolph Invite - Traub Debuts Strong Pat Montferrat Sep 12, 2008

Early Results

On a night that saw persistant rain and muddy course conditions, there were still some steller performances in the Randolph Invitational at Freedom Park.

It did not take Eastern Christian freshman Kristen Traub long to make a great first impression.

The diminutive frosh took the early lead and never gave it up as she took the Girls Group 1 race in 19:06.

Her time is the #20 All time mark on the Freedom Park course. Runner up in the race was Caitlin Hudson of Bronxville (NY) in 19:44.

Tuesday:

Monmouth County Championships

Iron Hills Conference Championships

BCSL - National / Olympic Championships (Bergen Co.)

Monmouth County (Holmdel Park)

The good news here on the girl’s side was the return of Colts Neck junior Briana Jackuciewicz to the races as she took the individual title in 19:01, running with a compression sleeve on her injured leg. Second place went to Lindsey Lambert (Sr. / Howell), who ran 19:17 with the bronze going to Janel Parker, a senior from Freehold Twp (19:39).  Jackuciewicz’ s time is the 2nd fastest on the Holmdel course this season.

Led by soph Michelle Capozzi (5th / 19:52), Red Bank Catholic took the team with 68 points (20:19 avg,). With Allison Linnell in 3rd, Colts Neck took the silver with 76 pts. (20:14 avg.). Third place went to Howell (82 pts. / 20:23 avg.).

Manalapan junior Robbie Andrews continues to show his great range with a 16:11 win over Bobby McGann (16:21) also a junior, from RBC. In all, the junior class took the top 4 spots with George Galasso of Holmdel in 3rd (16:22) and Colts Neck’s Mark Leinenger taking 4th (16:32).

CBA, which is no stranger to the Monmouth County winner’s podium, won the boys race here by once again running a tight pack. With their top 3 taking places 6-7-8  (Vin Ferrar, Kyle Havard, Ben Horel) to lead the Colts, CBA scored 49 points with a team average of 16:56 (26 sec gap). The 5 man average is the fastest at Holmdel Park this year. Holmdel High School finished second with 130 points, ahead of Red Bank Regional which scored 151 for the 3rd place finish .\"\"

Iron Hills Conference  (Freedom Park)

The Morris Hills Boys squad seems to be a fast track to rival the 2005 edition which was one of the finest teams  in recent memory. Coming off of a  third place finish in their race at Manhattan, the Knights took the Hills Division with 23 points. With Sean Poherance winning in 15:45, a Mo Hills sweep was prevented by Mike Franklin of Mendham who took 2nd in 15:55. 10 Questions With...Katie Kellner & Brian Leung Pat Montferrat Sep 07, 2007

\"\"Last year they were arguably the premier distance runners in Mercer County and by years end had made the move into the elite circle in all of NJ. Katie Kellner (jr.) and Brian Leung (sr.) of West Windsor-Plainsboro South are among the leading returnees this XC season. They took time recently to answer NJRunners “10 Questions”

1.) What type of mileage have you done this summer?

BL: After the spring season, I took 3 weeks off to let my hip flexor heal from when I injured it at the sectional meet.  I started out at 40 miles for the first week.  It was probably the hardest first week of training, even more so than my first week as a freshman.  I had to run in 116 degree weather since I was in Las Vegas with my mom.  After that, I slowly built up to 80 miles a week and have been running that kind of mileage for the past couple weeks.  This is definitely the best summer of training I have ever had.  I started doubling for the first time this summer and it has definitely paid off.  For the first time, I feel extremely fit and healthy while maintaining the most mileage I have ever done.

KK: I have done about 40-50 miles a week.

2.) What was your "Breakthrough Race" last year?

BL: The meet of Champions in XC was definitely my breakthrough race.  Just three weeks prior to the MOCs, I was still feeling terrible and couldn't run more than a couple miles at a time due to the mononucleosis.  But as I gave my body more time to fight it off, things started to come together.  I won my county race and then advanced easily from sectionals, to groups, then to the MOCs.  Coach Wayton has always been great and I remember two days before MOCs, he told me he had to be somewhere else.  Now in my mind, this was the biggest race of my life and I needed him to be there, but instead, he decided to go to the NCAA championships in Terre Haute.  He just told me to go out there and not be afraid to mix it up.  To this day, I have never been as relaxed as I was going into the MOCs.  Crossing the finish line, I Called Coach Wayton right away and his reaction was priceless.  The satisfaction I felt after that race is still the greatest emotion I can recall from running.\"\"

KK: My breakthrough race last year was the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel Park. I got second in the Girl's Varsity B race and ran 18:51. It was the first time I ever broke 19 minutes at Holmdel. This gave me confidence for the rest of the state races at Holmdel Park.

3.) Do you have any pre-race superstitions or rituals?

BL: I guess you can call listening to music before races a ritual, but I stopped doing that after I broke my ipod.

KK: I have one strange pre-race ritual. The night before any big meet I sleep backwards on my bed. I put my head where my feel usually are and my feet where my head usually is. I'm not sure how this started but for some reason I always have my best races when I sleep backwards.

Girls Top Ten Individuals

Who will be #1 on the podium at Holmdel Park. At least all of the contenders to the vacated Girls title should be on the line on 11/17.  With Danielle Tauro gone to Michigan and Ashley Higginson just down the road at Princeton, the title chase is wide open with no lack of talented, qualified girls vying for the crown.

Hot Morning, Hot Times - Race For Awareness 5K Pat Montferrat Aug 04, 2007

It helps to have friends and in Road Racing it sure helps to have fast friends. With the help of former Ocean City HS and current Kentucky standout John Richardson, the Race For Awareness 5K assembled one of the more star studded fields in recent South Jersey memory. In the building heat and humidity this morning JR & Co. did not disappoint, turning in the fastest 5K ever run in Ocean City, according to long time OCHS coach Bill Moreland. Villanova star and recent sub 4 minute miler, Bobby Curtis and NCAA steeplechase finalist Cory Nowitzke (Eastern Michigan) finished in a virtual tie with Curtis getting the nod (15:25.6 to 15:25.9). In all 8 runners in this “who’s who” of  distance completed the course in under 16:00. The top woman finisher was Jenna Jensen of BYU (23rd overall) in 18:13.7. Not bad for a low key event in early August.

In a seperate communication, Danser stated that the issue regarding use of splkes on the course will be up to coaches / athletes.

"We will only caution that spikes may be a problem, given the medal manhole covers, macadam, and concrete that athletes have to cross. We will let coaches/athletes make that decision"

\"\"From the Dream Season that saw his Morris Hills XC squad go to the Nike Team Nationals to his own highlight of running and finishing second in the Boys HS Mile Run at the hallowed Millrose Games, Kyle Soloff has been one of the steadiest high level performers in the state. NJ @ Eastern States Championships

Despite having competed only days earlier at the State MOC, many of New Jersey’s best runners, jumpers and throwers had shining moments last night in the 70th Eastern States Championships at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.

2 State Records were set in the meet which is one of the classics on the HS Indoor Circuit. Stephanie McIntyre of South Brunswick HS soared 40’ 11” on her last jump to break the existing record of 40’ 9 ¾”. The record was held by Carlene Cummings of Englewood and set in 1998. The other State record was set on the track by the Pope John XXIII Girls 4x800m Relay team. The foursome of Lauren Bariexca (2:16.5), Sarah Cariati (2:18.6), Emily Carrollo (2:14.9) and Lara Heigis (2:16.8) won the event in 9:06.94, to break the record of 9:08.34 set by Columbia HS (Maplewood) in 1997.
