10 Questions With...Katie Kellner & Brian Leung

4.) What is your all-time favorite movie?

BL: I don't really have an all time favorite movie.  As for running movies, I got to go with Running Brave.  Billy Mills' story is unparallel when it comes to inspiration.  In my mind, I'm kind of like him except that I'm Chinese instead of Native American.

KK: My favorite movie is The Sixth Sense

5.) Your thoughts on Colleges?

BL: I ‘m looking at a bunch of different schools now.  I'm just looking for a place where I fit in as an athlete and a student.  At this point, I've narrowed my search to D1 schools where I'll be able to run at a national level.

KK: I haven't thought too much about college yet. I do, however, want to run in college and I have contacted and met a few college coaches

6.) Which XC course is your favorite and why?

BL: Like the majority of the NJ runners, Holmdel is my favorite.  I would have been so mad if it was no longer the venue for the MOCs this year!  Holmdel is a place that sums up the true meaning of running in a sense that it's so easy to race there.  Sure it's extremely challenging, but just being there among hundreds of other runners makes the task at hand simple- to challenge the limits of your body and to see how you stack up against the other runners on the starting line.

KK: My favorite cross country course is Holmdel. I love Holmdel because most of the races held there have a lot of great runners from all around New Jersey. This makes the races very competitive. I like competitive races because they psyche me up and help me run faster times. Also, there are usually a lot of people to cheer you on at Holmdel and the course is different than the courses in Mercer County.

7.) What are your goals for this year?

BL: Being that it is my senior year, I'm shooting for the stars.  I want to win the MOCs as well as qualify for nationals.  It's going to be difficult.

KK: My main goal for this year is to run faster times. It would be awesome if I could break 18:50 at Holmdel. Also, I would really like to be in the top ten at the Meet of Champions. Lastly, it would be great if I could defend my Mercer County title at Veteran's Park.

8.) What advice would you give to a beginning HS runner?

BL: At least for me, the hardest thing for me as a freshman was gathering enough courage to step up and run with the guys who were slightly faster than I was.  My advice, never be afraid to run faster.  If you're feeling good, run faster.  There are no set places on the XC team and just because you start out as a number x guy, doesn't mean you can't move up.  Just don't be that person who only feels good on the recovery days and goes faster when you really don't have to.

KK: I would tell a beginning high school runner that you get what you put in. Even if practices are hard, it is always worth it to be able to set personal records later in the season. There is no better feeling than being proud of yourself for running a great race, especially a race that you put a lot of practice time into.

9.)  If you weren't a runner, what would you be doing?

BL: All through middle school, I didn't run a step because I was convinced that I was going to play in the NBA.  But finally, my mom convinced me that there aren't too many 5'6" Chinese guys playing these days.  However, if I wasn't running, I'd probably be playing lots of basketball even if it meant getting cut from tryouts again (I tried out for the teams in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade but got cut every time.)

KK: If I wasn't I runner, there probably is much other that I would be doing. The only difference is that I would probably spend more time skiing in the winter, which I really love to do. However, I'm really glad that I am a runner because I have made so many amazing friends and have had so many great experiences.

10.) Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

BL:  I don't even know where I'll be in one year let alone 10 years!  I just want to worry about getting into a college first.  After that, then maybe I'll start thinking long term.  All I know is that I'll still be running with a passion.  Hopefully, I'll be making lots of money so I can help out my younger brother, Winston.

KK: In ten years, I'm not exactly sure where I will be. I do, however, know that I will be running, whether it is on my own or competitively.
