CBA's historic distance crew struck again when the Colts burned up the track with the greatest 1,600-meter race by a team in NJ history to highlight a fast night of racing at The Winner's Circle Invitational at the Horse Farm at the Dr. George Sheehan Track & Field Complex on Wednesday in Lincroft.
In a lightning-fast race that saw 13 runners break 4:15, CBA became the first team in NJ history to have four guys dip under 4:14 in the same race!!!
Junior Luke Hnatt won the race in 4:09.29, senior Ryan Schmitt was second in 4:09.59, senior Alex Mastroly was eighth in 4:13.04, and sophomore Gavin Schmitt was 10th in 4:13.33. That comes to an average of 4:11.25 and an add up of 16:45.25!!! CBA now has eight runners who have cracked 4:19 this season.
For some perspective on just how impressive CBA's times are, the state record in the 4xmile is 17:12.34 (shared by Essex Catholic in 1967 and Union Catholic in 2022), and the winning time at the Meet of Champions last week was 4:12.10 by Hunter Celkupa of Colts Neck.
This race was so fast that 5 of the 7 fastest times in the 1,600 in the state this season and 11 of the top 18 times were run.
A few runners produced some of the fastest times ever run in the history of their county!!
Randolph junior Kennan Byers was third in 4:09.87, which places him fourth in Morris County history. Junior Matthew Littlehales of Delsea finished sixth in 4:11.54, No. 4 in Gloucester County history, and senior Eric Schleif of Metuchen was seventh in 4:12.33, which puts him No. 2 in Middlesex County history.
