BOYS RECAP
The South Brunswick boys, led by individual champ Vishnu Maharaj, rolled to their second straight title and 7th overall with a dominating 58-86 victory over runner-up East Brunswick. It's the first title for the Vikings since 2021.
Maharaj, sixth last year, was involved in a crazy finish.
As Maharaj tried to pass the leader, James Giordano of Monroe, as they battled down the final straightaway, Giordano interferred with Maharaj's attempt to get around him. Maharaj finally did pass Giordano just before the line to cross first in 16:13. Giordano, the top returning finisher after placing 4th last year, was disqualified for the infraction.
Maharaj is the fourth boy from South Brunswick to win the GMC XC title. He joins Eric Slayton (1999), Matt Zamorski (2014) and Vidhur Polam (2019)

ANDERSEN BLASTS NO. 2 TIME IN MEET HISTORY
Individually, Ella Andersen of Metuchen, third as a sophomore last year, blitzed the field, winning in a red hot 18:35, the second fastest time in meet history on the current course, which has been used since 2007.
The only girl who has gone faster on Thompson's layout at the GMC Championships is Metuchen's Mary Malague, who dropped an 18:10 to win in 2021..
Andersen's victory marks the 7th time a Metuchen girl has won the GMC individudal title, all since 2014. She joins Rachel Russ (2014 and 2015), Caroline Schleif (2019), Mary Malague (2021), and Gianna Hernandez (2023 and 2024) as Metuchen's champions.
Smith, who graduated from J.P. Stevens High in Edison in 1984, is the greatest girls' XC runner in NJ history!!!
Smith is the only 4-time GMC XC champ, the only NJ girl to win a national XC title (the 1983 Kinney Nationals),
was a four-time Central Jersey XC champ, the only 4-time State Group 4 champion, and at the prestigious Meet of Champions, she was nearly unbeatable.
In 1980, she became the first freshman ever to win the M of C. She repeated as a sophomore, and after placing second as a junior, she recaptured her title as a senior in 1983. Smith didn't just recapture her M of C title that season, she shattered the Holmdel Park course record with a 17:36 - a record that stood for 27 years!!!
Great job by the GMC to put Janet's name on the plaque and make sure her legacy lives on!!!!
