Union Catholic Wins 4x4 - Sydney McLaughlin's Monster Anchor Leg Feb 26, 2017

Full Results | Photos | InterviewsOn Sunday at the Girls NJSIAA Meet of Champions Union Catholic found themselves trailing by a large margin late in the 4x400 meter, an event which Union Catholic has won at this competition the past two years. That's when it comes in handy to have an Olympian anchoring your relay, as seen in the video above Sydney McLaughlin took the baton behind with a lot of ground to make up in second. It wasn't until heading into the final turn that she made contact with first place and powered forward from there to seal the victory. In the end McLaughlin threw down a magnificent 51.8 split and helped the team secure a NJ#1 US#7 time of 3:50.82. The squad consisted of two freshmen and two seniors: Leena Morant FR 59.3, Cassandra Lamadieu SR 59.3, Felicia Quainoo FR 60.0, and Sydney McLaughlin SR 51.8. She also competed in the open 400 meter earlier this meet running a new John Bennett Indoor Complex facility record and meet record of 53.17 US#1, and that is on a flat track. This is a great sign for McLaughlin's upcoming Nationals run, she already holds the national record at 51.84.Girls 4x400 Meter Relay Top 8 ============================================================================ School Seed Finals H# ============================================================================ Finals 1 Union Catholic Reg. Full Results | Photos | InterviewsJordan West of Rahway continued his great season and 60+ mark streak Saturday with his 64-00.5 win at the Meet of Champions. This is the 14th straight indoor meet he has had a throw of 60 or more feet and he has gone over that distance the entire 2017 season. His best performance of 65-6, which came during the State Relay Championships in January, ranks third all-time at the John Bennett Complex and currently has him ranked as US#4. This is West's second straight NJSIAA Indoor Meet of Champions victory. Shot Put Results 1Jordan West12Rahway HS64-00.502Giovanni Gutierrez12Saddle Brook HS59-08.503C.j. Semaj Willis of Trenton Central Wins High Jump at 6-10 Feb 25, 2017

Full Results | Photos | InterviewsSemaj Willis of Trenton Central won his first Meet of Champions title on Saturday clearing the 6-10 NJ#1 US#5 bar, a height he's been leading the state with since way back in December. You can watch a highlight of that winning jump followed by his interview above. Willis also finished fourth in the 200 meter showcase running 22.55, the only running event he chose to concentrate on at this meet. He was the top seed coming in for the 400 meter dash, after his exciting 'to the line' finish against Cory Poole when they ran 48.81 and 48.82 at Groups, but decided to save his legs for the high jump. While he didn't get his new PR at this meet he has an eye on that 7-0 height and will have another chance coming at Nationals. New Jersey hasn't had a boy clear 7-0 since Mark Jones of Summit in 2011, he won New Balance Nationals that year with a clearance of 7-0.25. High Jump Results 1Semaj Willis12Trenton Central HS6-10.002Jason Thobourne12J F Kennedy HS - Paterson6-06.003A'Nan Bridgett11West Windsor-Plainsboro North HS6-06.004Ryan Tompkins12Colts Neck HS6-04.005Davensky Joinvilmar11Asbury Park HS6-04.006Andrew Pondiscio12Sparta HS6-04.007Kasso Peaks11Eastern Reg. Rey Rivera Wins 800m 1:52.18 US#4 Feb 25, 2017

Full Results | Photos | InterviewsRey Rivera crossed the line a full two seconds ahead of the field at 1:52.18 US#4 on Saturday to win his second straight 800 meter Meet of Champions title. He now has four of those championships between indoor and outdoors. Rivera entered the race with the meet record in mind, a 1:51.72 by Issac Clark of Pleasantville in 2013, and despite falling just short of that mark he is now ranked fourth all-time at the John Bennett track. With this solid performance, an indoor PR, Rivera has some great momentum coming off this performance heading into Easterns and Nationals these upcoming weeks. Also in this race, Haig Rickerby of McNair Academic capped off his own great state season, now NJ#2 this season with a 1:54.45. 800 Meter Results 1Rey Rivera12Old Bridge HS1:52.1832Haig Rickerby12McNair Academic HS1:54.4533Eric Barnes12Egg Harbor Twp HS1:56.4334Kevin Heredia11Clifton HS1:56.4425Jalen Jones11Burlington Twp. Malual Mu of Trenton Central Wins 1600m 4:19.88 Feb 25, 2017

Full Results | Photos | InterviewsA big time win for the junior Malual Mu from Trenton Central, one that only came to fruition thanks to a ferocious last lap kick to overcome Colin Trigani of CBA who was leading at the time. Mu crossed the line with a 4:19.88, Billy Hill of Franklin made a move for second at 4:20.37 and CBA's Colin Trigani and Noah Yuro finished third and fourth at 4:20.53 and 4:20.73. Mu came into the Meet of Champions as the first overall seed thanks to his NJ#1 time of 4:16.03 at the Group 4 Championships last weekend, watch that race here. However this was a very strong field to try and plan for and Mu found out early that he'd have to adjust to the flow of the race, leading to that eventual exciting come from behind finish. This wasn't his first rodeo either, as a sophomore in 2016 he finished 10th at the Meet of Champions running 4:21.53, and now will return in 2018 to defend his title. At nationals he plans on helping his team in the sprint medley relay, then to come back the next day and compete in the championship mile event. 1600 Meter Run Results 1Malual Mu11Trenton Central HS4:19.8822Billy Hill12Franklin Twp.
