Christian Brothers Academy, ranked No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 1 in N.J., produced yet another performance for the ages at the NJSIAA Group Championships on Saturday at Holmdel Park.

CBA broke its own course record average with a 15:50.0, became the first team in state history to put five runners under 15:55 in the same race at Holmdel, and not only did it also throw down a perfect score of 15, but the Colts swept the first seven places on the way to their third straight Non-Public A State title and NJ record 33rd overall.

Ready for the most impressive part of their epic run? They were holding back!!

That's right, CBA coach Sean McCafferty had his entire seven stay together for the first two miles before letting them crank it up over the final 1.1. And they still took down the course record team average of 15:51.8 that CBA ran at this meet last year! That's just ridiculous.

This is the third-course record average of the season for CBA, who also took down the course records at Bowdoin and Ocean County Park.

How low are these guys going to go when they let it rip and cook at the
NJSIAA Meet of Champions next Saturday at Holmdel?

"I know we are ready to run something really fast, maybe even average in the 15:30s,'' said CBA senior Joe Barrett, who led the CBA charge by winning his second straight title in 15:35.

CBA's top seven were Barrett, senior Alex Mastroly, second in 15:54, junior Luke Hnatt, third in 15:54, senior Ryan Schmitt, fourth in 15:54, sophomore Gavin Schmitt, fifth in 15:55, junior Ryan Collins, sixth in 16:15, and junior Wyatt Falkowski, seventh in 16:21.

Getting back to Barrett you must be wondering how fast he closed after pacing the CBA pack for 2 miles. McCafferty had him in 4:05 for the last .97, so that puts him in the 4:10 range for the final mile! You read that right!

So now the question is how fast can Barrett go when he stays on the gas and aims for his second straight title at the Meet of Champions?

Sub-15 has been Barrett's target since the preseason, and he said on Saturday that he feels like he's ready to make a run at it.

Could Barrett break the Holmdel course record of 14:53 that was set in 2011 by the legendary Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict's Prep?

The short answer is yes. He could! It's possible!
