The truly gifted appear to be created in a high-tech lab; born of the latest science and space age materials. Everything about them is precise, creating an efficient stride that appears to flow like water. The genetic lottery they were so fortunate to win makes even the most grueling workout look effortless. They cover mile after mile without as much as a bead of sweat forming on their brow, while the rest of us contemplate what is worse.......death or vomit.

I am not the truly gifted. In fact, I might be the complete opposite. My gangly frame and choppy stride are stark contrasts to idealistic vision the sport places on a pedestal. I was not created in a lab; rather, I was forged on the road by the scorching summer sun and the hammer of the endless asphalt. The genetic lottery ticket I hold is the product of two equally unathletic parents, and any perceived talent I may display is the most certainly the product of hard work. But don’t feel sorry for me, because I know that my team’s success often rests in my hands.
The Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) brings together the best teams in the country and pits them against each other on the most unique course available. Portland Meadows will once again play host to the championship battle and the manufactured course that traverses the interior of a horse racing track will have all the traditional features of European style cross country racing; including plenty of mud.
New England has weathered a freak early season storm, but its disruptive nature has created lasting implications for the New England Championships. Power outages and muddy conditions across the region wreaked havoc on the post season in many of the participating states. As a result, getting a true sense of the race depth is difficult because of the modifications made to many of the traditional qualifying courses, and the postponement of the Connecticut State Open Championships to November 8th. But it’s the unknown that makes this sport so exciting.

Cheserek continued his revision of the record books by shattering the Goddard State Park 5,000 meter course by over 25 seconds. His winning time of 14:34.6 marks the fourth course record in as many weeks, and he confirmed that it’s all by design.
Catarina Rocha and Aisha McAdams enter Saturday's race with a wealth of credentials, but the pair will have plenty of company and a sea of maroon jerseys may envelop the two as the team battle rages in the front pack.
Many of the athletes we will see this season did not even race on the varsity level last year, and the coaches that demonstrate the patience to employ a long-term plan will most likely hoist a championship trophy in November. (Photo by Henry Finch)
Some of the smallest schools in Massachusetts are defying the odds and creating tremendous depth.
