Sianni Wynn opened defense of her 100-meter dash title in fast fashion by winning her heats in both the trials and semifinals on Thursday at the New Balance National Championships at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
The electrifying sprint star at Pennsauken High, ran a wind-legal and U.S. No. 4 time of 11.34 (1.8 meters per second) to win her heat in the trials, her fastest time of the season and the best time of all the sprinters in the openng round. Wynn came back a few hours later to win her semifinal heat with in 11.45.
Wynn's 11.45, run into a 2.2 meters per second headwind, was the third fastest time of the semifinals. Mya Arrendell, a freshmen at the Bullis School in Maryland, ran the fastest time in the semfinals off 11.31 (0.9 wind), and Morgan Goode of Parkland Magnet in Nashville ran 11.41 (0.8 wind).
The University of Florida-bound Wynn, who won the NB National title in the 100 last year in 11.29 and won the 60m and 200m at the Nike Indoor Nationals in March, will aim for her second straight 100m title on Friday at 12:12 p.m. Wynn, second in the 200 at the NB Nationals last year, is also schedueld to run the first round of the 200 on Saturday at 1:02 p.m. The 200 finals are Sunday at 3:44 p.m.
In Friday's 100 final, Wynn, who owns 3 NJ indoor records (55m, 60m, 200m), will also be chasing her first state outdoor record when she attempts to take down the wind-legal NJ record of 11.17 that was set by Wendy Vereen of Trenton at the 1983 National Sports Festival in Colorado Springs.
