After becoming one of the youngest athletes ever to qualify for a final at the U.S. Outdoor Championship, the rising senior at Union Catholic ran 2:02.78 to place ninth overall in the final.
Sheppard, who won't turn 17 until Oct. 24, was the only runner in the nine-runner race under the age of 21. The field featured six professional and two collegiate runners, making Sheppard's appearance in the championship race one of the most impressive accomplishments ever by a New Jersey high school athlete.
Sheppard earned her spot in the final with a sensational performance in Friday's first round, where she finished fifth in the opening heat in 2:00.99 to advance on time. Sheppard displayed her trademark closing speed by blasting past two runners over the final 100 meters to secure the last time-qualifying spot for the championship race.
The top two finishers in each of the three heats, along with the next three fastest times overall, advanced to the final. Sheppard's 2:00.99 was the third-fastest time among all runners who did not finish in the top two of their heat, the fifth-fastest qualifying time overall, and the second-fastest performance of her career.
In Sunday's final, Sheppard went through the opening lap in 59.33 seconds before closing in 1:03.45 to finish in 2:02.78. The race was won by Nia Akins, who competes professionally for HOKA, in 1:59.25. Akins, the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials champion in the 800, captured her fifth U.S. national title, adding to her collection of three outdoor championships and two indoor crowns.
Making a final at the U.S. Outdoor Championships as a high school athlete is an extraordinarily rare feat. The last New Jersey high school athlete to reach a final at the U.S. Championships was fellow Union Catholic star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who advanced to the 400-meter hurdles final at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials as a 16-year-old, where she finished third to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.
The historic weekend adds another remarkable chapter to the legendary career of the Stanford-bound Sheppard, who has won three national high school titles, and owns New Jersey records in the indoor and outdoor mile, the indoor and outdoor 1,600 meters, and the indoor 800.
Sheppard, who has an 800 PR of 2:00.65, is scheduled to compete at the World Under-20 Championships, Aug. 5-9 in Eugene, Oregon, where she will represent the United States in the women's 800 against the top junior athletes from around the globe. She earned her spot on Team USA by winning the 800 at the U.S. Under-20 Championships last month.
