Matt Elmuccio, one of the biggest track stars in New Jersey history and a highly decorated coach, has been named the new head boys' cross-country and boys' indoor and outdoor track & field coach at perennial powerhouse Haddonfield, the school has announced.
Elmuccio brings more than two decades of coaching experience and one of the most accomplished resumes to Haddonfield, which is one of the greatest XC and T&F programs in state history. Throughout his career, Elmuccio has built championship caliber programs, developed elite student-athletes, and earned widespread respect for his leadership, expertise, and commitment to excellence.
Most recently, Elmuccio served as the boys' cross-country and outdoor coach, as well as the boys' and girls' indoor coach at Cherry Hill West.
During his tenure at CHW, Elmuccio coached numerous school-record performances, guided the school's to its first-ever Group 3 State Relay Championship, produced the school's first Camden County boys cross country champion, and developed multiple sectional champions.
Before Cherry Hill West, Elmuccio spent 13 highly successful seasons at Pitman, where he established one of South Jersey's premier XC and track & field programs. His accomplishments included:
- Six South Jersey Group 1 sectional championships in girls' cross country and track & field.
- Group 1 State Championships in girls cross-country and outdoor track & field.
- Coached 32 sectional champions and 12 state champions.
- Led both the boys and girls programs to numerous relay and team championships.
- Was named the South Jersey Track Coaches Association Cross-Country Coach of the Year twice by his peers.
Elmuccio takes over a Haddonfield XC program that has won the last 8 State Group 2 titles, has captured 23 State XC titles overall, tied with Bernards for the second most in NJ history behind CBA's 34, and is coming off season where it finished ninth at the Nike Cross National Championships in its first ever appearance to finish the season ranked No. 9 in the national rankings.
Elmuccio's hiring gives Haddonfield one of the greastest and most dyynamic coaching combinations in NJ history as he joins a staff that includes legendary Olympian Erin Donohue, who was named Haddonfield's head girls' outdoor track and field coach last February, and XC girls coach Jason Russo, who has led the Dawgs to several state titles under his leadership. Talk about star power!!
Elmuccio, a 1997 graduate of Westfield High where he was coached by the great Jack Martin, became the first and only boy to win three straight outdoor Meet of Champions titles in the 1,600, won 3 indoor M of C titles (2 in the 800, one in the 1,600), anchored Westfield to the DMR Championship of America title at the Penn Relays as a sophomore, won 8 Group 4 State Championships (3 in XC, 5 on the track), earned All-American honors, and qualified for the 1996 Foot Locker XC National Championships. Elmuccio went on to run for the University of Colorado, where he was a named to the Big 12 All-Conference Team.
