Sianni Wynn and Camryn Thomas each captured titles to add to New Jersey's domination on Friday at the New Balance National Championships at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
Wynn, the electrifying junior at Pennsauken, avenged her loss in the girls 100-meter dash last year by burning a personal best of 11.29 to win the first national championship of her amazing career.
Thomas, a senior at Toms River North, scored the first win on the track for the NJ boys by running an Ocean county record 51.66 to finish first in the 400 intermediate hurdles. Thomas, who ran in the sixth and final heat, edged Davian Booker of Fredericksburg, Va., who ran 51.75 in the fifth heat.
The victories by Thomas and Wynn gave NJ four titles so far on Friday and five already in the 4-day meet that began on Thursday. And there should be many more to come.
In the girls 100 dash, Wynn got out fast and refused to get caught, freezing the numbers on the clock at 11.29. Defending champion and meet record holder Lisa Raye of West Warwick (R.I.) was 2nd in 11.38.
The victory by Wynn reversed the finish in this race from last year wen Wynn was second to to Raye. Wynn also finished second in the 60 dash at the Nike National Championships this past March.
The 11.29 by Wynn dropped her wind-legal PR down from the 11.30 she ran in Thursday's semifinals and is No. 2 all-time on the state's all-time wind-legal list behind the 11.23 that Naylah Jones of Timber Creek at the 2024 Group 3 Championships.
Wynn is scheduled to run the first round of the 200 on Saturday afternoon.
In the boys 400 hurdles, Thomas, running out in lane 9, broke his own Ocean County record and moved up to No. 9 in NJ history with his winning time of 51.66. Thomas ran the previous county record of 51.96 when he won the 400 hurdles at the NJ Meet of Champions on June 4 at Pennsauken.
In addition to the wins by Wynn and Thomas, NJ has also picked up victories from Benjamin Shue in the boys discus, Hannah Nuhfer of Delsea in the girls discus, and from Natalie Dumas in the girls 400 hurdles.
