Christian Brothers Academy and the Union Catholic raced into the record book when the powerhouse programs each extended their remarkable winning streaks to nine in a row at Wednesday's NJSIAA Non-Public A Relays Championships at the Bennett Center in Toms River.
CBA's nine straight titles is a state relay record and the Colts raised their state record to a remarkable 32 state relay titles overall. The Colts had shared the state record of 8 straight relay titles with Asbury Park (1988-95) and CBA (1981-1988).
The 32 titles vy CBA is 13 more than any other team in state history. Willingboro is No. 2 all-time with 19.
CBA kept its streak alive by winning four events and scoring in all nine events on the way to a dominating 70-43 victory over runner-up St. Peter's Prep.
The biggest highlight for CBA came when it ran a NJ No. 1/US No. 2 10:36.71. St. Peter's Prep was second with a NJ No. 3 time of 10:47.99.
The splits for CBA were 3:14.8 for Alex Kemp, 55.4 for Julian McFarlane, 2:07.0 for Alex Mastroly, who took a spill on the 800 leg, and 4:19.5 for Joe Barrett.
The other victories for CBA came in the SMR (a NJ No. 3 3:40.47), the high jump, and the shot put.
UC GIRLS TIE STATE RECORD
The Union Catholic girls once again showed that they are the No. 1 team with one the most impressive performances in meet history as the Vikings racked up 76 points out of a possible 90 to runaway with their ninth straight title.
UC won five of the six races on the track, and placed second in the pole vault, second in the high jump, third in the shot put, and fourth in the 4x800 to finish with 76 points. That's just missed the girls meet record of 80 points that UC scored last year.
The biggest highlights of the meet for UC came in the sprint medley relay, first in a NJ No. 1 and meet record 4:10.2, the shuttle hurdles, first in a NJ No. 1 31.74, and the DMR, first in a NJ No. 1/US No. 2 12:17.16. UC's 2 other wins came in the 4x400 (4:10.29) and 4x200 (1:43.25).
Union Catholic now leads the state in five relays-4x200 (1:40.70), 4x400 (3:53.07), SMR (4:10.2), DMR (12:17.16), and the shuttle hurdles (31.74).
