The Mendham boys and girls recaptured titles, and Luke Schagelin of Morris Knolls and Blythe Dudley of Villa Walsh grabbed the individual glory at the Morris County Championships on Tuesday at Greystone in Morris Plains.
In the boys team competition, Mendham, which won a third straight title in 2019, received PR's from its entire top five and returned to the winners circle behind a scoring combination of 2-5-12-13-27 that totaled 59 points, and the Minutemen averaged 16:18. Mendham put four runners in front of the No. 2 man for Delbarton, who finished second with 114 points.
The five scorers for Mendham were Tommy Jendryka, second with a huge PR of 15:49, Justin Bongiovanni, fifth in 16:00, Kenneth Allaway, 12th in 16:17, Sam Szczepanski, 13th in 16:18, and Carter LaSusa, 28th in 16:59.
Individually, Schagelin, a senior, threw down a big PR and school record of 15:42 to become just the third boy from Morris Knolls to capture the county crown, and the first since 1972 when George Moore finished first. The other Morris Knolls champ was Tim Steel in 1967. The 15:42 by Schagelin is a 14 second PR! His previous best was the 15:56 he ran to finish first at the NJAC Championships last week.

On the girls side, Mendham, who had its streak of 3 straight titles snapped by Villa Walsh, avenged that defeat and returned to the top with a 70-111 victory over runner-up Vila Walsh.
In the raw score, Mendham's top five finished 4-8-14-19-25 and averaged 20:07. The scorers were Kate Shaw, fourth in 19:03, Lindsay Portland, ninth in a PR of 19:44, Sophia Draxler, 15th in 20:18, Greta Hecker, 20th in 20:40, and Marisa House, 26th in 20:49.
Dudley, who finished sixth as a freshman last year, ran a PR of 18:22 to win her first title by 14 seconds over junior Maya Van Horn of Morris Tech, second in 18:36. Dudley's time 18:22 sliced nine seconds off her previous lifetime best of 18:31 that she ran to win first at the NJAC Championships.
