With the Union County Cross-Country Championships celebrating its 86th anniversary on Thursday at Warinanco Park in Elizabeth, we always like to rewind the cross-country clock and give all of you a little history lesson along with a preview of one of the oldest county meets in the state.
Down below you will see a complete list of every team and individual Union County XC champion as well as the all-SUB-16 runners at Warinanco for the current 3.19-mile dual meet course.
This years meet is so stacked with talent that there is a strong chance that all four course records will go down!!!
The boys race is a Clash of Titans between NJ No. 2 Westfield and defending champ and No. 3 Union Catholic.
On the girls side, NJ No. 1/US No. 9 Union Catholic is the biggest favorite in the history of the meet.
Let's take a deep dive into all of this.
BOYS INDIVIDUAL COURSE RECORD
Styler ran 15:42 to win the county title in 1998, which stood as the course record for 23 years. In 2021, Union Catholic's dynamic duo of Shane Brosnan (15:28) and Jimmy Wischusen (15:39) both ran under Styler's mark!!! Styler is pictured above with Brosnan (on the right) and Wischusen after the 2021 race.
But Brosnan's CR may not last very long.
The University of Virginia-bound Wischusen is back for one last crack at Warinanco, and he has Brosnan's record in his crosshairs. Wischusen is super fit and has the talent and drive to take down that record. He will have to run fast to win because of the presence of Westfield senior Avery Keith, who was second last year in 15:41.
With Wischusen and Keith running shoulder-to-shoulder and good conditions expected, I can see both studs going under Brosnan's CR. They are that good!
BOYS COURSE RECORD AVERAGE
Another record that could fall is the boys course record average.
Brosnan and Wischusen's 1-2 finish ignited the Vikings to the course record average of 16:02.6 when the Vikings won in 2021.UC went on to win the Meet of Champions that year and finished as the No. 1 team in the state.
Westfield has dropped averages of 16:22 at Bowdoin, which is No. 4 all-time for a NJ crew, and 16:08 at Holmdel, the fastest in course history for a Public School team. Both of those courses are significantly slower than Warinanco, and based the averages they've already run, Westfield has the talent to average in the 15:50 range at Warinanco!!
Westfield's biggest strength is it's compression. The Blue Devils, looking to extend its county record to 38 titles.
had a 28 second 1-5 spread at Bowdoin, and a 32 second split at Holmdel.
Westfield will have to be at its best to dethrone UC.
The Vikings, chasing a fourth straight championship, are coming off a very strong race at the Union County Conference Championships when they put their top 5 all under 16 minutes and averaged a course record 15:44 at Oak Ridge Park. UC will need its best race of the season to spring the upset and keep its title.
GIRLS COURSE RECORDS COULD GO DOWN-AGAIN
Perhaps the biggest lock in the history of any county championship race is the Union Catholic girls, who should steamroll their way to a third straight championship.
The only real questions surrounding this race is how much UC will smash the CR average by, and whether or not the Vikings will pitch a rare shutout by grabbing the top five spots. It could happen!
The course record average of 18:54 set by UC last year is expected to get crushed by the Vikings. How low will they go??? Well, the Vikings averaged 18:20 at Oak Ridge last week, and averaged 19:06 at the Shore Coaches Invit., No. 5 in Holmdel Park history. With their firepower, led by a lethal frontal attack that features freshman phenom Paige Sheppard, course record holder Peyton Hollis, and Courtney Kaiser, they could land in the 17:30 range.
As for the individual course record of 17:49, which was set by Hollis last year in her epic duel with Lindsay Hausman of Kent Place, also timed in 17:49 in the greatest finish in meet history, that could also go down! Sheppard, who ran 17:41 to break the CR a Oak Ridge last week, Hollis and Kaiser could all potentially go under 17:49.
SHOUTOUTS
A big shout out and thanks goes out to Union County XC meet director Bill Klimas for spending countless hours in the library digging through archives, microfilm, and dinosaur fossils to put this list together. And of course these lists wouldn't be possible without all the hard work by the late great Ed Grant, NJ's XC historian. If I had to guess, I'd say Grant probably covered and or officiated this meet close to 75 times!!
More about Kilmas - There are few people as passionate and knowledgeable as Klimas is about the sport of XC and track and field. Klimas has done it all in this sport. For those don't know, Klimas was a great sprinter during his days at Roselle Catholic, coached the sport for several years, and is now a T&F and XC official as well as a meet director for several championship meets.
Note: The course at Warinanco Park has changed a few times over the years. It started out as a 2.5-mile course, and then it was extended to a 3.25-mile layout in 1979 when it finished on the track at the old stadium. That course was called the "championship course,'' and was used for the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2 meet.
In 1988, the course was shortened to 3.19 miles when the finish line was moved behind the start line, and it has remained the same ever since. This course is referred to as the "dual meet course.''
According to former longtime legendary Westfield boys coach Jack Martin, who has wheeled both courses twice, the championship course was 87 yards longer than the dual meet course (the difference of roughly 15 seconds).
