STATE RECORD IN MILE FALLS FOR 2ND TIME IN 8 DAYS
How many times will the NJ record in the girls' mile go down this season?
So far the anwer is 2, but there is a very good chance that number goes up??
Eight days ago on Jan. 24, Paige Sheppard of Union Catholic ran 4:40.29 to break the NJ record at the Grand Prix Meet in Boston. The record had been 4:43.16, run by Michelle Rowen of Washington Township at the 1983 Eastern States Championships at Harvard.
On Sunday, Blair Bartlett, a junior at Lawrenceville, opened her indoor campaign by breaking Sheppard's record with her third-place time of 4:39.73. Bartlett, who was second at both the Nike and Brooks XC Championships, had splits of 67.09, 1:10.78 (2:17.86), 1:12.23 (3:30.09) and then closed in 69.65.
In remains to be seen how many times Bartlett and Sheppard will run the mile the rest of this season, and if they will clash in the same race. But if they do, that record will be toast again!!! They are just too talented to not keep raising the bar and pushing eachother.
