Group Meets On As Scheduled, NJSIAA Monitoring Air Quality

UPDATE: Group Championships Moved to One Day Meet

An update to the below article, the meet has since been pushed to a one-day Saturday meet.

The NJSIAA announced on Wednesday that they are monitoring the air quality due to smoke from dozens of forest fires in Canada, and that as of now the State Group Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday are on as scheduled.

"We are staying in touch with the New Jersey Department of Health regarding the air quality in the state, and as of now the meets are on as scheduled,'' said Al Stumpf,  the NJSIAA Track and Field Tournament Director. "If anything changes, we will be sure to let everyone know.''

The two-day State Group Championships are scheduled to begin Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Groups 1-4 and Non-Public A Championships are being held at Franklin High School, and the Groups 2-3 and Non-Public B Championships are being held at Delsea High School.

What if the Group Championships are postponed on Friday? Would the meets be moved to Saturday/Sunday with the same schedule or would the meets become one-day meet?

Stumpf said that will discussed on Thursday. Stay tuned!

NJSIAA Official Statement

"NJSIAA is closely monitoring air quality data across New Jersey and local/state health advisories. As start times for athletic events draw near, we will make decisions for each venue and sport based on currently available information. Schools should monitor official NJSIAA communications only for updates and understand that all schedules are subject to change.''

On Tuesday, the skies across the Garden State were filled with a haze as a burning odor wafted through the air. Much of the same is forecasted for Wednesday, which resulted in the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Liberty postponing their scheduled games because of the air quality. The Holmdel Twilight Meet scheduled for Wednesday was also cancelled because of the conditions.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued an air quality action day on Wednesday for the following counties: Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex, Union until midnight on Thursday Night. An air quality action day for particulate matter has been declared for Wednesday, June 7th and Thursday, June 8th. Sensitive individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and the young should limit strenuous activities and the amount of time active outdoors. Levels of fine particulates will rise into unhealthy for sensitive groups category statewide today and Thursday and likely last into the evening hours both days due to the wildfire smoke transport from Eastern Canadian wildfires.
