NJSIAA Indoor T&F 2023 Committee Meeting Notes

At the end of March the NJSIAA held their annual end of season committee meeting for indoor track and field. You can find the official NJSIAA meeting notes in the attached pdf document.

We also highlight some of the more interesting notes including a much earlier season start for the winter season in 2024.

MileSplit's Notes:

  • New Start Date: The 2024 Indoor Track and Field season will begin December 4th, 2023. Which moves Opening Day up 10 days. This removes the scrimmage preseason period, which for the most part was unused. The new transfer date is still TBA.
  • State Meet Size & Duration: One major topic involved the length and entry size for the NJSIAA meets, particularly at the Sectional level. There were multiple solutions presented, most notably it was either reduce entries per team per event from 3 to 2 or if not that then set minimum entry standards based on past meets. (A note to clear up the official minutes: MileSplit did not present the standards idea, we were asked if it was possible to create them based of past years.)
  • Unattached Athletes: Some athletes have been granted permission to compete despite their school not having a team that season. A long discussion was raised on how to handle this moving forward and the solution is still undecided at this time. Options were having them enter at the Sectional level and not count towards team scoring, enter at the Group level and not count towards team scoring, or simply have them compete at MOCs potentially requiring some level of entry standard.
  • Unattached Athletes Cont.: Seeds for the unattached athletes were also discussed as the NJSIAA does not want club times to be used for seeding. The potential to have seeds only come from NJSIAA sanctioned and officiated events while competing "unattached" as an NJSIAA athlete was presented. The method of reporting these results is still being worked on.
  • Medals Numbers: State Relays (Top 3), Sectionals & Groups (Top 6), MOCs (Top 8)
  • No Groups Doubleheader: The NJSIAA Group Championships normally saw a doubleheader on Saturday, this is now a three day series Friday through Sunday and the weekend morning Group sessions have been bumped back to 10am.
