During the NJSIAA Group 4 State Relay Championships on Saturday at the Toms River 'Bubble' the Toms River North HS and Cherokee HS girls kicked off the meet with a dramatic finish and national leading performances in the Distance Medley Relay.

Cherokee came in as the top seed leading most of the race but a kick to the finish by Jessica Abbott anchored Toms River North to the upset win clocked at 12:25.91 US No. 1, Cherokee's second place time of 12:26.09 ranks US No. 2 this season.

Toms River North's US No. 1 winning squad consisted of teammates Olivia Nickelsen, Jed Juliano, Rebecca Russalesi, and Jessica Abbott

Cherokee's US No. 2 DMR saw Kelsey Niglio, Megan Niglio, Kerry O'day, and Madison Van Haren take to the track.

The victory in the meet's opening event sparked the 50 point run for Toms River North that would win the team's Group 4 State Relay Championship, they led second ranked Eastern Regional by 14.5 points.

There are 11 New Jersey squads ranked among the top 21 girls Distance Medley teams in the US this season.

Joining Toms River North, US No. 1, and Cherokee, US No. 2, are Kent Place School at US No. 7 with their 12:42.45 from winning Union County Relays and Rumson-Fair Haven at US No. 8 thanks to their Group 2 State Relays winning time of 12:42.58.
