Non-Public A Girls
It wasn't a question of who would win the Girls Non-Public A Championships this weekend, it was a question of what they could score. The goal for Coach Mike McCabe's Union Catholic girls team was 200 points, and the team scored...200 points. That's the most points ever scored in any Group, boys or girls. The former record of 189 was set by UC last year.
The powerhouse performances came from everywhere, starting with a 13.93 in the 100 Hurdles from freshman and state leader Taylor Cox. The U.C. girls won all three relays and scored 10 or more points in 15 of 18 events.
Sophomore Peyton Hollis led a 1-2-3 sweep with a 2:09.63 in the 800 and came back to win the 1600 in 4:53.91. Junior Alexandra Bonn won both long jump (18'4.5") and triple jump (37'10.25"); and Columbia-bound Jada Mia Puryear won the discus (143'4") and shot put (39'10"). Also in the field Daniela Peralta threw 126-03 for gold in the javelin.
Christiana Nwachuku made plenty of noise on her own, as the Kent Place senior won the 100 (11.70), 200 (24.76) and 400 (55.09).

Non-Public A Boys
Union Catholic was chasing a State Championship triple crown after winning cross country and indoor track. Christian Brothers Academy was looking for its 6th straight outdoor title and 25th in school history.
Something had to give, and Union Catholic maximized its opportunities to win by a 139-114 margin. Nick Givan was everywhere, winning the 400 Hurdles (52.73), 400 (47.78) and 110 Hurdles (14.43). The 4x800 came down to the two powerhouses, and Union Catholic won that battle down the stretch as well, 8:12.16 to 8:13.74.

The track events featured several fierce battles. Union Catholic senior Myles Plummer held off Delbarton junior Collin Boler in the 800, 1:51.03 to 1:51.10. Boler came back to win the 1600 in 4:09.60. A Union Catholic trio including Jimmy Wischusen (4:09.87), Shane Brosnan (4:10.14) and Plummer (4:10.69) were just behind him, with Brian Boler taking 5th in 4:12.04. It was Brosnan (9:09.08) and Wischusen (9:10.14) going 1-2 in the 3200, with Colin Boler in 3rd at 9:13.90.
Fitzroy Ledgister was a bright-shining individual star. The senior torched a state record 10.39 on the first day, then added two more wins with a 23'6.5" long jump and a relaxed 21.29 200. Bergen Catholic's Benjamin Shue put up the state-leading mark in the discus (198'5") and also won the shot put (60'9").
