Alyssa Aldridge of Mainland Regional opened her Invitational season up on Saturday during the heat stricken Cherokee Challenge. The defending NJSIAA Meet of Champions winner finished second in the junior girls 3200 meter race running 11:47. That was also good enough for the fastest New Jersey time of the meet. First place went to Dominique Shultz of Conestoga (PA) who earned it with an 11:38, you can watch her interview below.
The Mainland Regional girls overall were running on tired legs, as they competed in a big dual meet with Ocean City just two days before. Mainland won 27-28, their first win over Ocean City since 1998!
In the interview above Aldridge touched upon her summer training, which involved more pool work to help build up her cardio without adding impact to her legs. She revealed she still incorporates the pool work into her season preparation and cross training. Her freshmen breakout year Aldridge did not run indoor track, and rather swam on the swim team. Her sophomore campaign was her first taste of a full three season running year when she decided to step onto the track instead of into the pool during the winter months.
Aldridge will be back in action this coming weekend at the South Jersey Shootout.
