Shore Conference Preview
Spectators at Saturdays Shore Conference Championships should expect some fast times, as the race returns to the generally flat Ocean County Park. The best 15 boys and girls teams from Monmouth County will face off against the best eight from Ocean County. In the boys race, it should be no surprise that Christian Brothers Academy is favored after scoring just 22 points at Monmouth County Championships last week. Their five man average was a mere 16:30.6 at Holmdel Park, where the team took the first three places.
The battle for second should be between Freehold Township, who placed 2nd at Monmouth County Championships, Southern Reg.(the Ocean County champion), and Holmdel, with Red Bank Catholic, Monsignor Donovan, Lacey, and Colts Neck also in the mix.
The individual competition should be interesting as Barnegat junior, Matthew Nelson, faces off against CBAs George Kelly, Mike McClemons, and Billy Bragg. Noah Jacobs of Lacey, who placed second to Nelson at the Ocean County Championships will also likely be in the lead pack.
Team competition should be closer on the girls side, where Southern, Red Bank Catholic, Rumson-Fair Haven, and Toms River North are teams to watch out for. Southern placed three runners in the top ten at Ocean County Championships, with their fourth and fifth runners not far behind. Red Bank Catholic will be looking for revenge on Rumson-Fair Haven, who took the team title away from them last week at Monmouth County Championships. With the top runners from Ocean County now in the mix, scoring could get a little closer. Toms River North also placed three runners in the top ten at Ocean County Championships, so they are not a team to be forgotten about.
The lead pack on the girls side should include Laceys Danielle Leavitt, Point Pleasant Beach senior Brianna Feerst, and RFHs Rachel Christ. Other runners to watch are Tara Connelly, Arielle Weiner, Marin Warner, Ashley Carle, and Jillian Smith.
