On Sunday January 27th, Brick Memorial (2008) and Duke University (2012) alumnus Andrew Brodeur won the High Mountain Coffee 10K Road Race in Mandeville, Jamaica. With a time of 31:38 Brodeur almost broke the course record! (Article on GoDuke.com) He would take home a nice winner's purse too, post collegiate training paying off.
Caught up with Brodeur to give some comments on the race -
"The race went out pretty hard because it was slightly downhill the first kilometer. However, the next 2.5ks were uphill totaling a 1,200 foot climb. The next 3ks were descending that 1,200 feet which was probably the toughest part with all that shock on the quads, hamstrings, and calves. The last 2k was flat but your body just feels super busted after the climb and descend. The weather was pretty humid, probably about 85 degrees but we were lucky to get a few drizzles during the race. It was definitely the toughest 10k course I have ever run."
What lead him to run a race in Jamaica you ask? So did I -
"I was contacted by a representative of Shore AC which sends a athlete to this race every year since they are so friendly with the meet director. After my 24:10 at the Ashenfelter 8k, I was invited to be that representative."
What's next on the race schedule for you? Any goals? -
"Lately I have been doing rabbiting for some of my teammates/athletes. I put them on pace to get competitive times to get into bigger meets or seeded races at ACCs. I definitely plan to run Duke Invite and Penn Relays come spring time but that is still awhile off."
