Following Saint Rose’ victory at the Non Public Group B Females’ relays, NJRunners caught up with Saint Rose throwers, Aiyeola Aiyenigba and Katherine Burns.
“I actually just started doing shot put this year,” said Burns. “Every time I go out there I just try to improve upon my last throw. Today I did beat my personal best by about a foot so I’m real happy about that.”
The Non Public Group B Female division for the shot put bolstered an extremely small population of schools for such a meet. Aiyenigba felt it offered a great advantage to just go out there and throw without having to sit and wait through countless other athletes.
“I’ve been back forth and with my throws all year,” said Aiyenigba. “Today though, I didn’t really think about who else was throwing, I just came out here and threw. Since there were so few competitors, I felt it was easier for me to throw.
Burns throw of 29-02.00 and Aiyenigba’s meet leading toss of 31-08.00, which totaled at 60-10.00, was enough to handily win the gold. Second place Mater Dei was about thirteen feet behind Saint Rose with a total of 47-11.75 and probably more concerned with keeping the silver with two other schools within the 47 to 48 foot range.
“When I was talking to my coach, he was telling me to make sure I had height in my throws to make them go farther,” said Burns. “I felt pretty good about that last one.”
“I threw 31 which is good, but my shot put career goal is over 40,” said a laughing Aiyenigba. “If I start working out more and perfect my form, I know I’ll an even higher number eventually.”
