Following Franklin’s victory at the Group IV Females’ Relays, NJRunners caught up with Franklin shot put coach, Jamon Dunn.

“I was expecting the girls to compete at a high level, expecting their best,” said Dunn. “They put in their work this week, and they’re reaping the rewards now.

In the final flight, Franklin was seeded two schools after Egg Harbor Township. Going into the third and final throws, Franklin had a slim 00-02.25 distance advantage over Egg Harbor Township, already ensuring a better spot in the standings. However, Franklin thrower Ashley Berry added another ten inches to that total, replacing her best throw of the night with a 34-10.75.

“I know that our girls are throwing at a high level and my only concern was their nerves heading into their last throws,” said Dunn. “We just settled them down a little, and they did very well.”

Dunn plans to have the Franklin shot put team compete in the Lavino Relays in Lawrenceville, New Jersey on January 19. His expectations are for the Franklin athletes to throw well at Lawrenceville, but he has bigger aspirations in mind for his squad.

“We’re looking toward training for the Skyland Conference Championships two weeks from now,” said Dunn. If his throwers continue to throw the way they threw in the Group IV relays, look for them to be in the top tier at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on January, 26.
