Dylan Hosty of Haddonfield continued one of the greatest seasons for a freshmen in New Jersey history when she destroyed the state freshman record and burned a 4:42.21, No. 5 in NJ history, to place fifth in the girls' Freshman Mile at the Brooks PR Invitational on Sunday at Renton Memorial Stadium in Renton, Washington.
Hosty's 4:42.21 chopped nearly 5 seconds off the NJ freshmen record of 4:47.04 set in 2013 by Claudia DiSomma of Sparta at the adidas Grand Prix Meet at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island in New York.
Hosty, whose previous PR was the 4:49.48 she ran at the Penn Relays in April, was in 8th place in the 9-runner field when she went past the half-mile mark in 2:24.73. But she cranked out a 2:17.48 final half mile, including a 65.60 final quarter to rally to place fifth!!
With her 4:42.41, Hosty moved past her legendary coach at Haddonfield, Erin Donohue, on NJ's all-time outdoor list in the mile.
Donohue, who ran the 1500 at the 2008 OIympic Games, ran her high school PR of 4:42.96, which was the NJ state record at the time, when she won the mile at the 2001 Adidas National Championships at North Carolina State University. That was the final race of Donohue's high school career.
Now there are five NJ girls who have run faster than Donohue did in high school, including Hosty.
How crazy is that!!!
Hosty's performance in the mile was the second NJ freshmen record she broke in five days. She ran 2:06.04 to place fourth this past Wednesday in the 800 at the NJ Meet of Champions, which was the NJ freshman record until Abbey Robisky of Union Catholic regained that record on Sunday at the Brooks meet.
Hosty is just the second girl in U.S. high school history to run under 2:07 for the 800 and under 4:45 for the mile as a freshman!!!!!
Sadie Engelhardt, now an All-American at North Carolina State, ran 2:05.66 for 800 and 4:35.16 for the mile as a freshman at Ventura High in California in 2022.
Hosty and Engelhardt!!!
That's it!! That's the list!!
How awesome is that!!!!
