PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Hannah Nuhfer got the redemption she was looking for in dominate fashion when the star thrower at Delsea won the girls' discus on the opening day of the 130th Penn Relays on Thursday at historic and sunsplashed Franklin Field.
The Penn State-bound Nuhfer, who finished ninth here a year ago, left no doubt about her supremacy in the circle with winning heave of 177-0, which came on her final attempt.
Nuhfer, who won the discus at the New Balance National Championships here last June, won by more than 16 feet over runner-up Dionjah Shaw of Edwin Allen in Jamaica, who threw 160-4.
Nuhfer took the lead right away with an opening throw of 175-1. After a 143-10, she had throws of 174-4, 169-4, 172-0 and then the 177-0.

Nuhfer is the fourth NJ girl to win the discus at the Penn Relays. She joined Sarah Herskee of Mendham (1999), Jocelyn White of Delsea (2004) and Layla Giordano of Old Tappan (2024).
"Last year I just let things get into my head and thought too much about the competition and was overthinking,'' said Nuhfer,'' who threw a NJ No. 2 all-time 179-6 at the Woodbury Relays last Saturday. "I was much more mentally focused and confident today and was able to relax and have a great day in the circle. Last year really fueled me to come back and win. I had something to prove to myself.''
Nuhfer was asked about her pursuit of the NJ record of 182-0, which was set by Alyssa Wilson of Donovan Catholic in 2017.
"I know how close I am, but I really try to not to think too much about it because I know from my training and my throws in practice that I have it in me to break that record,'' said Nuhfer. "It will come when it comes. It's obviously a huge goal.''
