Union Catholic Boys Strike Again, Win SMR, Break NJ Record


The Union Catholic boys strike again!! A day after shattering the national record in the 4x800-meter relay, the NJ powerhouse squad delivered another record-smashing performance, running a blazing NJ record 3:25.41, No. 7 in U.S. indoor history, to win the sprint medley relay at the New Balance National Indoor Championships on Friday night at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston.

The time broke the New Jersey record of 3:25.68 that was set by Toms River North when it finished second at the 2025 New Balance Nationals. New Jersey dominated the race, finishing 1-2 as Hackensack surged to the runner-up spot in 3:26.00. Hackensack's time ranks No. 3 in New Jersey history and No. 13 in U.S. history.

Union Catholic's record-setting lineup featured junior Shahid Stevens, junior Jalele Williams, senior Ciaran Brosnan and senior Keandre Kelly. Stevens and Williams handled the 200-meter legs and combined for a blistering a 42.78. Brosnan followed with a 49.02 for 400 meters, and Kelly closed it out with a 1:53.62 carry on the anchor leg.

The victory comes after the Vikings made national headlines Thursday when Kelly and Brosnan teamed up with Elijah McCoy and Quintin Clemons to win the 4x800-meter relay in a national-record 7:35.05.

Hackensack's standout quartet was comprised of Darius Pemberton, Jayden Desouza, Dustin DeCambre and Seven Garcia. Pemberton and Desouza ran the 200-meter legs, combining for 44.02. DeCambre followed with a 48.57 split for 400 meters before Garcia anchored with a 1:53.61.Garcia, the NJ Meet of Champions winner in the 400, will be running in the 400 final on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. Garcia quaified by running 47.68 in Friday's preliminary round.
