Jessica Oji of Livingston HS hit a huge shot put PR Wednesday night during the Essex County Indoor Relay Championships at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island, NY. The star senior launched a 57-4.5 on her third of four attempts in the series.
That distance skyrocketed Oji to U.S. No. 2 all-time, only an inch separating her from the national record of 57-5.5 held since 2017 by another New Jersey throwing great Alyssa Wilson.
Full Series: 55-0.75 / 53-7 / 57-4.5 / 53-7.75
This is her sixth meet this season with a 50-plus foot mark in the event. Her season series includes a 51-8, 52-1.5, 53-6.75, 51-5.5, 53-6.5, 42-0, and 57-4.5, and the national leader doesn't seem to be done there.
Jessica's sister Nesta Oji finished fourth overall in the event, throwing 36-0. As a relay team, where the top marks of two teammates are totaled and scored, they combined for a total distance of 93-4.5!
Last spring, Jessica went undefeated in the shot put with nine victories capped off by a national title at New Balance Nationals Outdoor. She has three NJSIAA State Meet of Champions titles between indoor and outdoor.
This rise to second on the national all-time list makes her strong return from an ACL injury playing soccer in the spring of 2023 even more impressive. An experience Oji spoke about during her interview at the 2024 Penn Relays, which she won with a mark of 46-4.
Jessica Oji has an outdoor season best of 51-10in the shot put and 161-7 in the discus throw.
We are officially on national record watch!
