Hillsborough Girls, Ridge Boys Repeat At Somerset County

RESULTS

The Ridge boys and Hillsborough girls continued their local supremacy when both teams successfully defended their titles and Franklin's Qiora Rollins was a triple winner at the Somerset County Championships on Tuesday at Hillsborough.

On the boys side, Ridge captured its second straight title and fourth overall in dominating fashion with a 118-60 victory over runner-up Hillsborough. Ridge won its other 2 titles in 2009 and 2021.

With the victory, the Ridge boys swept all four Somerset County titles this school year-cross-country, the indoor track and field championship, the outdoor relay title, and now the outdoor track and field championship.

In the girls competition, Hillsborough made it three straight championships and 13 overall with a hard-fought victory over runner-up Franklin, 136-117.

BALANCED ATTACK SPARKS HILLSBOROUGH

As usual, the key to Hillsborough's 3-peat was its balance.

Seniors Sabrina Sardar and Laina Denys led the way on the track for the Red Raiders by combining for 45 points.

Sardar had 3 PR's and scored 26 points. She won the 400 hurdles for the second straight year, running a PR of 1:02.88. She also finished second in both the 400 (57.67) and the 200 (26.06).

Denys won the 800 in 2:18.41, placed second in the 1,600 in 5:10.26, and was sixth in the 3,200.

In the field, Hillsborough senior Ella Karolewski, the Meet of Champions winner in the pole vault this past winter, cleared 12-3 to win the PV, just shy of her PR of 12.3.50 that she cleared to win the Emerging Elite Division at the New Balance Nationals last June. Junior Angela Volkova led a 1-4-6 for Hillsborough in the shot put with a winning throw of 37-3, which is a big PR.

M AND M BOYS SPARK RIDGE

Ridge's Owen Mays and Brenden McMahon spearheaded the attack for the Ridge boys by combining to score 43 points.

Mays, a senior, won the 400 with a massive PR of 54.88, finished first in the 110 hurdles in 15.28, placed fourth in the triple jump with a PR of 41-10 and ran 23.28 to finish sixth in the 200.

McMahon, a junior, won the 1,600 in 4:15.75 and finished second in the 3,200 in 9:23.90. Junior Lukas Disko of Bridgewater-Raritan won the 3,200 in 9:22.77
