Zawatski Runs N.J. No. 4 All-Time/U.S. No. 1 Mile In Boston

Watch Emma Zawatski run US No. 1, NJ No. 4 All-Time, green uniform.

Emma Zawatski threw down one of the fastest mile times in New Jersey history and took over the national lead with an epic performance at Saturday's John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University.

The University of Colorado-bound Zawatski, a senior at Freehold Township, dropped a time of 4:45.96, which is No. 4 in state indoor history and the fastest high school time in the country this season.

Zawatski finished ninth in her heat and 34th overall in a field of 207 runners, which was filled with mostly college runners and some pros.

Zawatski's 4:45.96 placed her No. 4 on NJ's all-time indoor list. Only Michelle Rowen of Washington Township, who ran the state record of 4:43.16 at the 1983 Eastern Championship at Harvard, Lilly Shapiro of Colts Neck (4:45.39 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University in Feb. of 2022), and Camryn Wennersten (4:45.62 at Ocean Breeze in 2022), have run faster than Zawatski.

The splits for Zawatski were 35.48, 35.22 (1:10.70), 35.83 (1:46.52), 36.37 (2:22.88), 36.56 (2:59.44), 35.83 (3:35.27), 35.68 (4:10.95) and she closed in 35.02, her fastest lap of the race.

Zawatski, who has captured four Meet of Champions titles in her career (two in XC, one indoors and one outdoors), sliced nearly three seconds off her mile PR of 4:48.71 that she ran at Boston University last February.

Zawatski will take another shot at the state record in the mile when she toes the line at the Millrose Games on Feb. 11 at the Armory in New York.
