There is a very small number of athletes who have pulled off the quad (wins in 4 individual events) at a county championship meet, but the senior at Seton Hall Prep is two victories away from adding his name to that very short list at today's Essex County Championships at Schools Stadium in Newark, which starts at 4 p.m.
Matulonis got his quest to join the exclusive quad club off to a great start on the first-day of the meet on Thursday when he won the 400 hurdles (54.09) and the 400 (48.76) to help defending champion Seton Hall Prep take a commanding 76-22 lead over Columbia in the team standings.
The U-Penn bound Matulonis will have his work cut out for him when he tries to finish off the quad today when he competes in the 110 hurdles and the 800 dash.
Matulonis has run 14.91 in the 110 hurdles this season, the No. 2 time in the county this season behind the 14.89 run by Livingston's Ray Oji. But Matulonis has a PR of 14.66. In the 800, Matulonis hasn't run many open 800's in his career, but he's favorite to win the 2-lapper based on his 1:53.72 800 split at the Penn Relays last month.
