Layla Giordano Is Having Historic Season In The Circle

Layla Giordano of Old Tappan moved alongside some of the all-time greats in NJ history in the circle with the bombs she unloaded in the shot put and discus at the Bergen County Championships this past weekend.

Giordano's remarkable throwing double of 45-6 and 153-11 put her on a very short list of NJ girls who have surpassed both 45 feet in the shot put and 150 feet in the discus.

Giordano, a junior, is just the fifth girl in state history to hit both of those numbers, and her 153-11 broke her on Bergen County record and places her No. 7 in NJ history in the discus.

The other four throwers who have gone beyond both 45 feet in the shot and 150 in the discus are Alyssa Wilson (Donovan Catholic/Class of 2017), Jessica Woodard (Cherokee/Class of 2013), DeAnne Hahn (Brick/Class of 2008), and Sylvia Galarza (Millville/Class of 2004). Wilson is the state record holder in both throws (58-1 and 182-0). Woodard had high school PR's of 47-1.25 and 168-10. Hahn finished high school with PR's of 47-6 and 153-3, and Galarza went 45-5 and 153-2.

Giordano, who also plays volleyball and basketball at Old Tappan, has improved quite a bit since last year. Coming into this season, she had PR's of 39-8.25 in the shot put and 128-8 in the discus.
