Gonzalez Moves To US No. 2 In Shot Put, Breaks Ocean Mark

One of the most eye-popping results in the state so far this season came in the shot put circle on Saturday when Fabian Gonzalez of Southern Regional unloaded a massive bomb at the Woodbury Relays.

Gonzalez, who is headed to Stanford, sent the 12-pounder soaring 65-9!!!

That's places him No. 13 in NJ outdoor history, No. 2 in the country this season, and it shattered the Ocean County record, and is a PR of more than 4 feet!!!

Gonzalez broke the Ocean County record of 64-9.50 that was set by Todd Stueber of Toms River South at the 2017 South Jersey, Group 3 Sectional Championship, and his 65-9 is the best throw in NJ since Jordan West NJ of Rahway launched a 67-10 to place second at the 2017 New Balance Nationals.

Gonzalez, whose previous best was a 61-7.25 that he threw at the Delsea Crusader Invitational last May, came into the meet with a season best of 59-1.75. His series at Woodbury was sensational - 60-9.50, 65-9, foul, 59-1.50, foul, and 63-11.50.

The only high school athlete in the country who has thrown further than Gonzalez this season is Ben Smith, a junior from Hortonville High in Wisconsin. Smith launched a 67-7.25 at the FVA Conference Quad Meet n April 10

Gonzalez, who is also NJ No. 2 in the discus this season with a 183-7, came into this season with a great resume.

He finished fourth in the discus at the 2021 Nike Outdoor Nationals, and seventh in the shot put at the 2022 Nike Indoor Nationals. He won the Meet of Champions title in the discus in 2021. Last spring, he won the shot put and discus at the Group 4 Championships, and was seventh in the discus and 10th in the shot at the M of C last year. His discus PR is 189-9, which came at the Delsea Crusader Invit. last May
