Leah Howard of Millville continued her torrid season in the javelin with one of the greatest performances in New Jersey history at Saturday's Woodbury Relays.
Howard sent the spear soaring 163-1 on her first attempt to move all the way up to No. 2 in NJ history (with the current implement that's been used since 2002) and is now No. 2 in the nation this season!!! The 163-1 also places Howard No. 32 on the all-time national list.
The Texas Tech-bound Howard, who came into the meet with a PR of 151-10 that she threw at the Lenape Invitational last Saturday, also had throws of 152-7, 154-11, 157-2, and 146-7!!! What a series!!
Howard, who earned the Female Field Athlete of the Meet award for the second straight year, is getting very close to the state record of 168-6, which was set by Brielle Smith of Oakcrest at the 2019 Woodbury Relays.
The only high school girl in the country who has thrown further than Howard this season is Trinity Spooner of South Beauregard High in Longville, Louisiana, who threw a US No. 11 All-Time 171-11 at the Texas Relays.
Howard is now the favorite to win the javelin at the Penn Relays this Friday. The javelin is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
