Collin Boler of Delbarton blew up the track with one of the greatest performances in state history on Sunday when he threw down a 4:04.05 in the mile at the Last Chance Qualifier at Boston University.
The 4:04.05 by Boler puts him right up there with some of the icons of the sport in New Jersey!!!
Boler's time places him No. 2 in state indoor history, and makes him the fourth fastest high school miler in NJ history, indoors and outdoors combined!!!!
The only NJ high school runner to go faster indoors than Boler is the great Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict's Prep, who clocked a 4:02.15 at the 2012 New Balance Games at the New York Armory. Cheserek is considered by many to be the greatest high school and college distance runner of all-time.
Rankings: Boys NJ One Mile Rankings Indoor 2023
On NJ's all-time high school outdoor list, only legendary Marty Liquori of Essex Catholic (3:59.8 in 1967), Cheserek (4:03.29 in 2011), and all-timer great Robby Andrews of Manalapan (4:03.49 in 2009) have run faster than Boler. Talk about some fast company!!!
Boler, and his twin brother Brian (who won his heat in 4:14.43), both ran unattached in a field filled with college and pro runners.
In Collin's race, he used a 29.60 final 200 to fight off a strong challenge from Elliot Metcalf, a junior at Rice University, to win the sixth of the 10 heats. Boler's 4:04.05 was the 40th fastest time of the 119 runners who finished the mile, which included 34 guys under 4!! His splits were 62.85, 2:04.04, and 3:04.58. Boler ran the final half mile in 2:00.01, and the last quarter in 59.47.
The Princeton University-bound Boler, who is now US No. 4 in the mile this season, sliced more than five seconds off his PR of 4:09.15 that he ran to win the mile at the Millrose Games earlier this month at the NY Armory.
Next up for Boler, who won the 800 at the Meet of Champions last spring, is the 800 at the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze next Sunday. Then he will finish his season at the New Balance Nationals in Boston where he will run the mile, anchor the DMR, and may also run the 800. Delbarton has run a US No. 2 10:08.85 in the DMR this season.
