The History Of The Union County Cross-Country Championships

With the Union County Cross-Country Championships celebrating its 85th anniversary on Thursday at Warinanco Park in Elizabeth, I figured this would be a good time to rewind the cross-country clock and give all of you a little history lesson about one of the oldest county meets in the state.

Down below you will see a complete list of every team and individual Union County XC champion as well as the all-SUB-16 runners at Warinanco for the current 3.19-mile dual meet course.

There sure have been some legendary runners who have come through this county.

One of the greatest runners of them all is Tim Styler of Cranford. Styler ran 15:42 to win the county title in 1998, which stood as the course record until last year when Union Catholic's dynamic duo of Shane Brosnan (15:28) and Jimmy Wischusen (15:39) both ran under Styler's mark!!! Styler is pictured above with Brosnan (on the right) and Wischusen after the race last year.

Brosnan and Wischusen's 1-2 finish ignited the Vikings to the greatest race in meet and course history last year when UC dropped a course record average of 16:03 as the Vikings captured their first title. UC went on to win the Meet of Champions last fall and finish as the No. 1 team in the state

GIRLS COURSE RECORDS COULD GO DOWN

Undefeated junior Peyton Hollis of No. 1 ranked Union Catholic will be chasing the CR of 18:26 that was set in 2017 by Victoria Vanriele of Gov. Livingston. Hollis, in her first season of XC, ran a CR 17:52 at the Union County Conference Championships last week at Oak Ridge Park.

Led by Hollis, Kaleigh Gunsiorowski, and Courtney Kaiser, who have finished 1-2-3 in all their races this season, UC should take down the CR average of 19:28 set in 2013 by Westfield at the conference championships.  UC ran a CR avg. of 18:35 at Oak Ridge at the conference meet.

CLASH OF TITANS

Thursday's boys race has all the makings of an instant classic as defending champion and No. 2 ranked few Union Catholic will clash with No. 4  Westfield and No. 7 ranked Summit!!!  UC finished ahead of Westfield and Summit at the conference meet last week, but Westfield held out most of their top runners in that race.

How many boys will go sub 16?? There is a chance for multiple runners add their names to that prestigious list. Time will tell!!!

SHOUTOUT TO BILL KLIMAS

A big shout out and thanks goes out to Union County XC meet director Bill Klimas for spending countless hours in the library digging through archives, microfilm, and dinosaur fossils to put this list together. And of course these lists wouldn't be possible without all the hard work by the late great Ed Grant, NJ's XC historian. If I had to guess, I'd say Grant probably covered and or officiated this meet about 70 times!!

One more thing before you go diving through this remarkable list of champions, this is a good place to mention that there are few people as passionate and knowledgeable as Klimas is about the sport of XC and track and field. Klimas has done it all in this sport. For those don't know, Klimas was a great sprinter during his days at Roselle Catholic, coached the sport for several years, and is now a track and XC official as well as a meet director for several meets.

Note: The course at Warinanco Park has changed a few times over the years. It started out as a 2.5-mile course, and then it was extended to a 3.25-mile layout in 1979 when it finished on the track at the old stadium. That course was called the "championship course,'' and was used for the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2  meet.

In 1988, the course was shortened to 3.19 miles when the finish line was moved behind the start line, and it has remained the same ever since. This course is referred to as the "dual meet course.''
According to former longtime legendary Westfield boys coach Jack Martin, who has wheeled both courses twice, the championship course was 87 yards longer than the dual meet course (the difference of roughly 15 seconds).
