Future Stars: Benjamin Shue Debuts With A Shot Put Bomb

There is another great lefty spinner who is taking the state by storm.

His name is Benjamin Shue, and the freshman at Bergen Catholic has wasted no time making his presence felt in the circle.

In the first meet of his high school career, Shue, who like state record holder and legend Nick Vena is a lefthanded spinner, unloaded a 54.5.75 to finish first at the Purple Champions Invitational at the New York Armory last Saturday.

With his 54-5.75, Shue, the subject of this week's NJ MileSplit "Future Stars'' spotlight series, is now No. 2 in state indoor history for a freshman, No. 8 all-time for a freshman in US indoor history, and is No. 9 in the state this season.

Vena, who established himself as one of the greatest high school throwers in US history during his days at Morristown High, holds the state and national freshman indoor record with the 66-7.25 he unloaded to win the 2008 National Scholastic Championship. Vena owns the state records in the shot put both indoors(71-9.50) an outdoors (75-10.25).

The impressive debut by Shue, who is throwing unattached this season because he's competing on the state championship winning BC wrestling team, doesn't come as a surprise.

Shue, also a member of Bergen Catholic's 2021 state championship football team, compiled remarkable numbers and several huge victories as a middle school star.

Last March, Shue won the Middle School Division at the NSAF Meet of Champions in both the shot put and discus. Now Shue is a force to be reckoned with on the high school level, and has the talent and drive to be a huge star on the nationally.

NJ MileSplit's "Future Stars'' series will feature a different freshman each week throughout the season.
