Morristown Sweeps, Chen, Douglas Burn Top Times At Stewart

Morristown swept the team titles, and Brandon Chen of West Morris and Sophia Douglas of Somerville ran the fastest times at the Stewart Invitational on Friday at Oak Ridge Park in Clark.

Chen, a senior, ran a PR of 15:48 to win the boys B race by 40 seconds to spark West Morris to the team title. Chen's previous best time was the 15:57 he ran to win the N.J. Section 2 Group 3 XC title last fall at Oak Ridge. West Morris went 1-11-22-23-25 and averaged 17:30 to edge Kinnelon, 82-86. Kinnelon went 3-4-6-36-37 and averaged 17:41. 

In the boys A race, Morristown, led by individual winner Theodore Kuelker, who matched his PR with a 16:18, went 1-9-13-15-21 and averaged 17:14 on the way to a 59-91 victory over runner-up North Plainfield.  

On the girls side in the A race, the Morristown girls made it a sweep for the Colonials with a hard-fought victory over runner-up Matawan, 67-76., and Douglas, a freshman, won the race in a personal best 19:24. The Mo-Town girls, who averaged 21:39, were led by senior Meghan Young, fifth in 20:28, and junior Grace DelGiornoseventh in 20:51.


In the girls B Division, senior Tara Smurla of Cedar Grove (19:44) and Pingry captured the titles. 

Pingry, led by third-place finisher Olivia Murray (20:07),  had a great race as it jammed its top five runners in the top eight, averaged 21:07, and had a 1-5 compression of 55 seconds en route to a 27-63 victory over Bernards.
