Distance Star Lilly Shapiro Makes Her College Decision

Lilly Shapiro of Colts Neck, one of the top distance runners in state history, announced her college decision on Saturday.

The winner is the University of North Carolina!!!

Shapiro, one of the biggest recruits in the country, announced on her Instagram account that she has verbally committed to be a Tar Heel.

UNC is getting one of NJ's all-time best in Shapiro.

Shapiro's resume is simply remarkable.

As a junior this past spring, Shapiro made state history by becoming the first girl to ever run under 2:10 in the 800, under 4:50 in the 1600, and under 10:20 in the 3,200! That's right, no one else has ever done that! Shapiro's PR's this season were 2:09.82 in the 800, 4:40.55 in the 1,600, and 10:18.36 in the only 3,200 she's ever run!

Shapiro's 4:40.15 at the Holmdel Twilight meet is the fastest time in NJ history for a 1,600m race, and is No. 2 all-time on the converted mile list behind Danielle Tauro's 4:39.25 mile (4:37.45c) in 2006. And Shapiro's 10:18.36 is No. 11 in state history

Shapiro also racked up numerous county, conference, and state titles this season as she led Colts Neck to one of its greatest seasons ever.

She won the 800 and 1,600, and anchored the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relays at both the Central Jersey, Group 3 Championships and the State Group 3 Championships to spark the Cougars to the team titles. Then at the Meet of Champions last week, Shapiro turned in a stunning distance double when she placed second in the 1,600, and came back to win the 800!

Shapiro has also piled up several impressive victories and times on the cross-country trails.

She's captured two Monmouth County XC titles, two Central Jersey, Group 3 championships, one Shore Conference title, and she ran a Holmdel Park PR of 18:39 last fall.

Congrats, Lilly!!!
