Oakcrest junior Brielle Smith has had a spot among the state's elite javelin throwers for years now. She was third as a freshmen at the Meet of Champions, second as a sophomore, and now in 2018 she leaves the meet with gold in hand. Not only that but her throw of 163-08 broke the previous state record was a 160-08 held by Maria Jimenez of Vineland since 2012.
Smith is just the second girl in state history to break the 160 foot mark. She had previous best of 151-03 coming into the meet, and on her last throw of the meet hit over a nine foot PR. Her other throws involved 158 and 159 and the win was sealed so the throw star left it all out there on the final attempt.
