Mario Heslop, a junior from Franklin Twp, dropped some major time off New Jersey's 300 meter indoor state record on Saturday. The feat took place during the Dr. Sander Invitational on Saturday at The Armory Track in New York.
Heslop won the 300 meter dash with a time of 33.26, a US No. 4 effort this season, moving him past Zyaire Clemes of Trenton Central as the all-time New Jersey state leader. Clemes ran a 33.50 in 2014 to win the New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational. This performance also places Heslop top 10 all-time nationally, now tied with former TC Williams (VA) High graduate Josephus Lyles, who ran this same performance in 2016.
Just a week ahead of this achievement by Heslop, Brian Herron, Eric Allen Jr. and Tyrese Cooper destroyed the national junior class record at The VA Showcase, where Herron ran a sizzling 32.64. The previous record was held by Noah Lyles at 33.32 since 2015, Heslop just ran under that Lyles time as well.
In short, this performance was FAST.
Akeem Lindo of East Orange also broke out a quick time in December with his 34.05 to win the Marine Corps Holiday Classic. He ranks #8 all-time in state indoor history.
