All Safe | Shabazz Track Bus Catches Fire Sunday Morning

The Shabazz track and field team boarded their bus to head to Essex County Relays on Sunday morning, a normal weekend of competition until the bus started to fill with smoke.

First reported by NJ Advance Media's Jim Lambert, about 32 athletes of the Shabazz boys and girls teams had to evacuate the bus when head coach Damon Harrison noticed smoke underneath the vehicle. Students already inside toward the back noticed the smoke starting to fill the bus as well and yelled for the team to exit.

Thankfully everyone escaped without injury, however many lost uniforms and equipment. The meet director John Tonero delayed the start time of the meet to allowed Shabazz to grab another bus and compete.

Here are results from the Essex County Relays which Shabazz still attended and competed in.
