It felt like it was a matter of time and that time has finally come. Alyssa Wilson of Donovan Catholic (NJ) broke the outdoor national record in the shot put with a throw of 57-01.25 (17.41m) at Ocean County Championships on Monday.
Before this Wilson was ranked second all-time in the discipline thanks to her previous outdoor best of 55-9.25 which earned her the win at New Balance Nationals Outdoor last spring. She is having a historic senior campaign having set the indoor national record as well at 57-5.5 this past winter, becoming the only girl in high school history to break 57 feet.
She's also versatile having thrown a New Jersey state record in the discus with a mark of 182-0, that performance ranks US#1 this season and breaks into the top 15 all-time. You can read more about and watch that performance here. This throwing sensation has signed on to learn and compete at UCLA this coming fall.
She once again passes another successful shot put thrower Raven Saunders, who held the previous best shot put mark of 56-8.25 since 2014 at the Taco Bell Classic in South Carolina. Before Wilson broke the indoor record Saunders had held that honor as well. You can watch Saunder's record breaking throw from 2014 below.
