Following Matt Santangelo’s victory at the North II, Group I shot put event, NJRunners caught up with him.
The North II, Group I Meet on Monday, February 4, was showcased by the “Battle for Hanover Park” in the male’s segment of the shot put event. First place was taken by Matt Santangelo of Hanover Park, who beat out his team mates Ryan Agbim (51-00.50) and Chris Clement (44-08.25) with a booming toss of 54-03.00. Preventing the 1-2-3 sweep was Pietro Biancamano (46-02.75) who took bronze and left Clement in fourth place. Regardless, the night belonged to Santangelo who broke his PB not once, but twice.
“I wanted my throws to be up-to-par and a few of them certainly were,” said Santangelo. “First I hit 53 which was a new PB by about a foot, and then 54 which was awesome.”
Santangelo and Agbim were in a league of their own being the only two eclipsing that 50 mark. Even though they are both team mates, and cheered each other on during the meet, there is still a desire to beat the other in order to take that gold medal.
“Tonight I wanted beat to Ryan and get first,” said Santangelo. “Once Ryan caught up to me, I was like, I’m going for broke and throwing it as far as I possibly can.”
He certainly did “go for Broke”, when he added another foot onto his already new personal best. No doubt, Santangelo will continue on with that all or nothing attitude and should see another PB or two in the near future.

Following Caroline Hewett’s victory at the North II, Group II shot put event, NJRunners caught up with her.
At the North II, Group II Meet on Monday, February 4, the female’s shot put event was a nail biter right down to the finish. There were only two flights of females and then an additional Finals flight as well. First and second places were decided by 00-00.25, while third and fourth places were tied and decided by each thrower’s second best toss. Taking gold was Caroline Hewett, who ended the night at 31-01.00 which was good enough for her own PB.
“I hadn’t been throwing that great for the last couple meets,” said Hewett. “I was a little nervous but throwing 31-01 was extremely surprising and it felt amazing hitting that PB.”
Not far behind Hewett was Kimberlynn Polynice, who showed up big in the Finals flight. The toss which got her into the finals was 28-10.75, which was good enough for seventh place overall. On her final throw she propelled herself into first place, with 31-00.75, only to be passed up by the very last throw of the night which belonged to Hewett of course.
“My throws just kept getting a little better each time as the meet went on,” said Hewett. “I felt good with all of my throws tonight, especially that final one.”
