Following Timber Creek’s victory at the Group 3 Males’ relay, NJRunners caught up with Timber Creek throwers, Antoine Hawkes and Solomon Potter.

“Coming into this meet, we and our coaches were expecting 47 from each of us,” said Hawkes. “We didn’t quite hit those marks, but [Potter} hit 45 and I hit 46 which won, so for now we’ll take it.”

“We’re doing it for our team man,” said Potter. “Whatever helps our team win states is what we’re going to do.”

Going into the third and final throws, Timber Creek had a small lead of about two and a half feet over Morristown. However, Morristown’s Sean Wukitsch added almost another two feet onto his relay score with a final throw of 43-06.00. The throw looked dangerously close to being enough to overtake Timber Creek’s 91-09.00, but in the end, the Charger’s pulled out with a gold medal by two and three quarter inches.

“On my first throw, I was trying something new, and it didn’t quite work,” said Hawkes. “However, I then wrapped my wrist and progressed on my second throw to hit that 46.”

“This was my first meet spinning,” said Potter. “I threw 45 my freshman year and got hurt last year, so it felt good to win even though I know I can throw a bit better.”

Timber Creek’s throwers plan to practice Sunday and into Monday in order to prepare for their next upcoming meet on Tuesday. They showed that they desire to not only improve upon their own skills as shot putters, but also a desire to help all of their team mates.

“We’re going to head straight out there and start throwing, and hit up the weight room more in order to get better,” said Hawkes with a laugh. “Our ultimate goal is to simply get better.

“I’v seen a couple guys throw farther than me today,” said Potter. “However, I still got time to practice and show the team what I got offer.”
