NJ High School XC Athletes of the Week
Week Ending 9/24/11
Much has been written about Edward Cheserek this week, and all of it superlative. Dana Giordano started the invitational portion of her senior XC season with a repeat win at the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational. Edward's awesome course record breaking 14:53 at Garret Mtn. and Dana's successful start on the Road to the MOC earn them our Athlete of the week honors and the stylish, limited edition NJRunners.com tee shirt.
Girls: Dana Giordano
School: Bernards HS (Bernardsville)
Graduation: 2012
This Week:
Dana, the defending Group 2 champion, returned to Great Adventure and in her invitational debut, recorded her second win on the Wild Safari course. Her 18:10 performance led her Bernards team to a second place finish in the Varsity "C" race. The Bernards senior appears headed for the Ivy League next year.
Honorable Mention
Sarah Di Sanza - High Point Reg. HS (2013)
Dina Iacone - Washington Twp. HS (2012)
Samantha Jones - Randolph HS (2012)
Boys: Edward Cheserek
School: St. Benedict's Prep
Graduation: 2013
This Week:
Edward opened his season in a big way. He took down the Course Record at Garret Mtn Reservation with a blistering time of 14:53. This performance erases the 15:16 mark set by all timer Mohamed Khadroui back in 2003. With his patented, out fast (very fast...4:25ish 1st mile) style, Edward brought it home 1:47 ahead of the runner up. Cheserek now sets his sights on his first ever race on Holmdel Park. How fast is anybody's guess.
Honorable Mention
Steven Flynn - Edison HS (2012)
George Kelly - Christian Brothers Academy (2012)
