Paige Sheppard Wins The 800 At U20 Championships

Paige Sheppard continued her historic season by dominating the women's 800-meter run at the USATF Under-20 Championships on Friday at Hayward Field in Oregon.

The legendary junior at Union Catholic ran from the front and dared someone to try and catch her. Nobody could as the Stanford-bound Sheppard executed her race plan to perfection, leveling up once again to win the 2-lap race in 2:01.76 to lock up a spot on the U.S. team that will compete at the World Under-20 Championships, scheduled for Aug. 5-9 at Hayward Field.

In a race featuring several college freshmen, the 16-year-old Sheppard took the lead at the bell as she hit 400 in 59.26, and then she kept hammering her way around the oval before pulling away down the homestretch to finish nearly a second ahead of senior Ellie Barada of Bloomington South in Indiana, who who ran a big PR of 2:02.72 to place second and secure the second and final berth on the U.S. Team.

This is the third national title of Sheppard's career. She also won the mile at the 2025 New Balance Outdoor Nationals and the 800 at the New Balance Indoor Nationals this past March.

Sheppard has been the class of the country all season in the 800, highlighted by her U.S. No. 1 2:00.65 at the Brooks PR Invitational earlier this month, which is No. 7 in U.S. history. And Sheppard has shown she's capable of winning in many different ways. She has showcased a huge closing kick to rally to win some big races, she's run some negative splits to win, and lately she's been more aggressive early and taking control of races and pushing the pace.

The bottom line is that Sheppard, who also smashed the NJ record in the 1,600 this season with a 4:28.77, is having a season for the ages.

What are Sheppard's chances of winning the 800 at the U-20 World Championships?

She's currently ranked No. 5 in the world in the U-20 Division, but with the way Sheppard is racing combined with her sheer talent, fitness level, confidence, training, and her passion and drive, she's more than capable of going sub 2:00 and pulling off the win.
