On Track - The Week In Review (4/10 - 4/16)

What's been going on in New Jersey Track and Field this week? Well, lotsa meets this past weekend and lotsa bad weather too.  Despite the rain/cold/wind there were some surprisingly good performances.

 

April 17, 2011

 

Art Madric Invitational

  •  In a meet rescheduled from April 16 due to severe weather, Kristen Traub won the 1600 in 5:02.91.   Megan Venables running her opener was second in 5:13.20 and ran a leg on Highland's second place 4x80
  • Highland boys did not win any events but they won the team title by one point over Penn Wood.

 

 

April 13, 15 and 16, 2011

New York Relays 

 

  • Najee Glass duplicated his 21.86 qualifier from Friday in winning the 200 and breaking his own meet record (wind-legal -0.1).  Zamir Thomas qualified second right behind Glass in 21.96 but did not run the final.  Thomas was the fastest qualifier in the 100 (10.95) and then was first in the final in 10.86 into a -2.4mps headwind over teammate Rashawn Taylor.

 

  • The Washington Twp. 4x1600 team of Anthony Dentino, Daniel Gresh, Jordan Fraction and George Dwyer was 3rd in 18:18.41 5.36 seconds behind winner Monsignor Farrell.

 

  • Snyder won the 4x100 in 42.88.

 

 

Colts Neck Relays

 

  • Dominick Padovano of South Brunswick went 171-9 in the discus teaming with Adam Dickert for the win.  South Brunswick won the shot, discus and javelin team titles.

 

  • Lenape girls' 4x1600 win marked the return of Natalia Ocasio to the track after she missed the indoor season due to injury. 

 

 

Jack Yockers Bergen County Relays 

 

  • The javelin competitions saw Jamie Klein (Paramus Catholic) 128-7, Shauntierah Douglas (Garfield) 125-11 and Rebecca Skovira (Park Ridge) 123-7 go US numbers 17, 26  and 31 respectively. 

 

  • Ridgewood boys' 4x1600 meter relay won the group A race in 18:12.6 NJ #1.  Indian Hills was first in group B (18:14.1 - NJ #2).

 

  • Teaneck's 4x200 meter relay team of Malcolm McKnight, Bryan Murphy, Jamal Williams and Daryian Miles won the group A 4x200 in a fine 1:29.4, second this season only to Snyder's 1:29.2.  The same team except for Nevon Williams instead of Jamal won the 4x100 in 43.8.

 

  • Hackensack's Stephen Mozia is getting closer to Bergen County's oldest outdoor record with his 178-1 discus throw.  The BC record is held by Mike Bunic (Fair Lawn - 1980) at 189-2Mozia also threw the shot 59-3 for the best mark of the meet.

 

  • 2010's outdoor national champion Kaleb Zuidema of Midland Park threw 191-11 in the javelin.

 

  • Ramapo's Brad Paternostro anchored the winning group B sprint medley in 1:52.9.

 

 

Blue Devil Classic 

 

  • Summit won the girls' DMR in 12:21.91, third on teh New Jersey list this outdoor (not yet spring) season.

 

  • Nick Vena captured not only the top spot in the shot put (70-4) but also the New Jersey senior class record.  He now has all New Jersey class records for the event indoors and out.

 

  • Columbia girls won all but two events on the track and placed second in the DMR.

 

 

HCTCA Relay Carnival 

 

  • CBA finished first (18:26..3), 4th (19:17.5) and 5th (19:21.4) in the 4x1600 with the C team beating the B team for 4th place.  CBA also won the DMR, shuttle hurles and 4x200.

 

 

Holmdel Relays 

 

  • Lakewood's Essence Mayers had the best jump of the meet by over four feet with her 18-4.25 for the #1 mark in New Jersey.

 

  • East Brunswick boys clocked 43.28, 1:30.36, 3:28.55 and 3:47.06 in winning the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medley respectively.  Leonard Robbins anchored all but the SMR as East Brunswick won the team title by 1 point over Matawan.  Sam Mattis had a fine 57-0.25/178-4 shot/discus double to help the cause.

 

 

Mercer County Relays 

 

  • West Windsor South girls won the distance medley by 44 seconds in 12:30.0, eighth fastest in New Jersey this young outdoor season.

 

  • West Windsor South nosed out North for the 4x1600 title by 1.5 seconds as Joe Rosa returned to the track.

 

  • Trenton Central boys wont eh 3x400 hurdles by more than 6 seconds in 2:56.3 and the shuttle hurdles in 1:01.7 by 2.3 seconds. 

 

 

Morris Hills Relays 

 

  • Claudia DiSomma continues to round into shape after missing indoors with a broken leg.  She anchored Sparta to a win the sprint medley and ran a leg on the winning 4x400.  Sparta was without 400/800 star Erika Veidis who was off visting her future home at Harvard.

 

  • On the boys' side, Edward Cheserek had another one of those days, anchoring St Benedict's to the win and a meet record in the sprint medley with his 1:50.9 800 split.  The winning time of 3:29.88 is #1 New Jersey and #2 US for the outdoor season.   The ssecond half of Cheserek's double was a 4:08.5 split to bring home the gold in the distance medley after getting the baton 80 meters behind the leaders.

 

  • West Orange won the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and was second in that sprint medley.

 

 

Woodbury Relays 

 

  • Cherokee's Jessica Woodward, already the state discus leader, threw 133-5. Better than the second performer in the state to date.

 

  • Megan Kirschling of West Deptford jumped 5-7 #1 in New Jersey and = #25 US.

 

  • The girls' javelin was excellent here as Katherine Johnston (Haddonfield Memorial) 133-3, Maria Jimenez (Vineland) 131-4, Melissa Lake (Cherokee) 123-4 and Valerie Orth (A P Schalick) 122-5 beame NJ numbers 2, 3, 6, and 8 this season.  Those marks are also US numbers 10, 11, 18, and 37.

 

  • In the long jump, Winslow freshman Cidae'a Woods leaped 17-10.5 (#3 NJ) and Timber Creek's Bryanna Williams went 17-7.5 (#7 NJ). 

 

  • In the division 1 boys' competition, Woodbury swept the sprint relays with clockings of 43.17, 1:30.39 and 3:24.50 (4x400) and 3:43.99.  Darrell Bush,  Marcus Upchurch and Terrance Tolbert ran on all three relays with Frank Williams running on the 4x100 and 4x200 teams and Ted Johnson on the 4x400.  The SMR team was Bush, Tolbert, Upchurch and Joel Howell.

 

  • In division 2, Willingboro swept the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 events with marks of 43.79, 1:30.78 and 3:29.29.

 

  • Haddonfield won the 4x800 (8:08.82) and distance medley (10.29.16) the fastest time of the day.

 

  • Division 3 saw another 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 sweep with Timber Creek doing the honors this time in 43.28, 1:31.66 and 3:33.99.  Indoor 60 meter national champion Damiere Byrd anchored all three teams.

 

  • Oakcrest had the sweep in division 4 with clockings of 42.55 (#1 NJ), 1:29.63 (#3 NJ) and 3:25.85 (they already have the #2 NJ mark).  Reginald Morton, Fabian Santiago and Darnell Charles ran on all three teams while Justin Veltri ran the 4x200 and 4x400 and Charles Deam Williams the 4x100.

 

  • This meet had the best long jumping of the day as Kevin Potter (Timber Creek) and Nick Rodriguez (Haddonfield) went 24.75 and 22-0 respectively. 

 

  • Bridgeton's soph Braheeme Days Jr had a fine shot/discus double of 55-9.25/170-2.

 Patriot Invitational Track & Field Series 

 

  • Zamir Thomas and Rashawn Taylor of Snyder went 1-2 in 49.3 and 50.5.

 

  • Jose Veras and Edwin Young of Dickinson also finished 1-2 in the 400 hurdles timing 55.8 and 57.4.

 

  • Snyder also took the #1 NJ spot in the 4x200 in 1:29.2.

 

 

Previous News: 

 

  • On Sunday in the NJCTC Relays at Notre Dame (Lawrenceville) Christian Brothers Academy ran a state record 16:09.4 in the seldom run 4x1500m Relay.  That's the #2 mark all-time US.

 

  • Edward Cheserek (St. Benedict's) and the Rosa twins, Jim & Joe (West Windsor-Plainsboro No.) have been added to the Adidas Dream Mile field. The loaded HS race to be held at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island (NYC) on June 11th.  This race will also include (so far) Lukas verzbicas, Ammar Moussa and Jantzen Oshier.

 

  • Phil Ragan of CBA threw the javelin 191-10 at the NJCTC relays on Sunday.  That mark ranks US #8.

 

  • With not much to do on a Sunday morning while sitting out his 30 days, Edward Cheserek took to the roads at the Cherry Blossom 10K in Newark's Branch Brook Park.  He clocked 31:08.56 for the win, spliting 15:30.16/15:38.40 for each 5K.
