Competing at the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton University, Edward Cheserek was second behind Donn Cabral in the 3000 meter steeplechase. His time, 9:00.11 takes down Andy Martin's state record of 9:03.79 set in 1984. It is also a national class record for sophomores smashing the record of another New Jersey great Brad Hudson. Hudson's record was 9:16.2 set in 1983. Cheserek's mark breaks the national record for 17 years olds. The former record of 9:02.56 was held by Noel Bateman of Rochester, NY and was set in 2006.
Cheserek's time is also the 5th fastest of all time in the US.
Recently at the New Balance Indoor Nationals Cheserek was second in the 2 mile in 8:42.66, the fastest time ever run by a New Jersey high school boy and he was NJRunners Athlete of the Year for the 2010 - 2011 indoor season.
